The story of the 300 Spartans has always fascinated me. In 480bc King Leonidas led his tiny force against an overwhelming Persian army in the battle of Thermopylae. They fought the Persians to a standstill until, betrayed by a traitor they were slaughtered to a man. Their stand goes down in history to this day. The sculpture is based on the 1961 film The 300 Spartans starring Richard Egan.
